Water Monitors make a splash!

On May 10, Friends of
Milwaukee’s Rivers and our partners at River Alliance of
Wisconsin trained seven new advanced water quality monitors
at Havenwoods State Forest in Milwaukee.
About half of these monitors
have previously participated in FMR monitoring efforts as
Water Action Volunteers (Level I monitors,) and the others
have professional water quality monitoring experience and
wanted to help out with stream monitoring!
These Level II monitors will be
testing sites in Sheboygan County, Cedarburg,
Mequon/Thiensville, and the Milwaukee area. On May 31, FMR
and Riveredge Nature Center trained 21 Water Action
Volunteers on a beautiful day on the Milwaukee River in
Newburg. Besides learning how to test dissolved oxygen,
temperature, flow, macroinvertebrates, and conduct visual
assessments, volunteers were also treated to a tour of
Riveredge’s sturgeon rearing facility.
Volunteers will be testing sites ranging from Campbellsport
to Fredonia, Grafton, Menomonee Falls, and the Southside of
Milwaukee.
Thanks to our friends at River
Alliance and Riveredge for helping us with these trainings,
and to Norcross Wildlife Foundation and the Natural
Resources Foundation of Wisconsin for their generous
donations that enabled us to purchase monitoring equipment
this year.
Nenn receives monitoring award

Our own Cheryl Nenn, Milwaukee
Riverkeeper, was awarded the 2008 Stream Monitoring Award
for Outstanding Employee at the Annual Clean Rivers
Clean Lakes Conference on April 28. This award is presented
jointly by the WDNR and University of Wisconsin-Extension in
recognition of exemplary
efforts in Stream Monitoring in Wisconsin. Cheryl and Kris
Stepenuck, the statewide Citizen Monitoring Coordinator for
DNR/UWEX, also presented at the conference on the importance
of citizen water quality monitoring efforts, highlighting
our monitoring efforts in the Milwaukee River Basin.

More than 75
volunteers turned out for the Friends of Milwaukee's Rivers
Summer River Cleanup
FMR's Summer River Cleanup on
June 7th drew in over 75 volunteers eager to help our
Rivers. The cleanup was followed by a delicious vegetarian
cookout provided by Whole Foods Market and lively
entertainment by IfIHadAHiFi, all of which wrapped up well
before the storms hit! Friends of Milwaukee's Rivers would
like to thank all our volunteers, Whole Foods Market, Tom's
of Maine, IfIHadAHiFi, the Milwaukee County Parks, and
everyone else who helped make this very successful cleanup
possible.
