Important! Don't let Rep. Huebsch destroy the Strong Great Lakes Compact!

Last Thursday, over 150 citizens attended the State Senate hearing on the Great Lakes Compact. That day, a bill (SB 523) was introduced that is very similar to the Strong Compact we have all been seeking.

The next step is to bring the bill to the Assembly. Unfortunately, the Speaker of the Assembly, Rep. Huebsch, and the Chair of the Natural Resources Committee, Rep. Gunderson, have issued a press release which opposes even a weak Compact. They are looking to renegotiate the Compact and ignore years of negotiations between the eight Great Lakes States, leaving the lakes vulnerable to diversions and lawsuits.

Huebsch has implied that he will not schedule any more votes in the Assembly after this week, even though there are three more weeks of session scheduled. This prevents everyone in the Assembly from voting on the Compact and prevents it from becoming law.

Please contact Rep. Huebsch at 888-534-0094 and insist that the Assembly must vote on SB 523! Also be sure to contact your Representative and ask them to demand that Speaker Huebsch bring SB523 to a vote in the Assembly!

Lobby Day 2008 a success

Lobby Day 2008 was a great success! Despite the inclement weather, more than 260 citizens took time out of their busy schedules to brave the cold and tell lawmakers about the importance of the Great Lakes Compact and the other Conservation Priorities!

If you weren't able to make it, there's still time to tell your legislators you care! What they hear from citizens between now and Mid-March can make a huge impact. Be sure to contact your legislator and tell them you support a Strong Great Lakes Compact!
