Comment Period Opens on New Berlin
Proposal to Use Lake Michigan Water
MADISON – A 60-day public comment
period opens today on New Berlin’s proposal to withdraw additional
water from Lake Michigan, State water officials announced.
New Berlin has submitted the proposal because wells that serve a
part of the city located outside of the Great Lakes Basin are
producing groundwater with high levels of radium, a known
carcinogen. Through an agreement with the state, New Berlin will
shut those wells down to meet a December deadline for bringing its
groundwater radium levels into compliance with state and federal
standards. However, the shut-down is only a temporary solution and
does not account for potential long-range issues such as increased
summer water usage or failure of primary wells.

Milwaukee Urban Water Trail named
Recommended Water Trail
Friends of Milwaukee’s Rivers’ Milwaukee
Urban Water Trail was designated this month as one of twelve
“Recommended Water Trails for 2006” by the American Canoe
Association. The water trail includes a map that shows canoe and
kayak access points, portage locations and places of interest.
Signage along the trail lets boaters know where they can put in and
take out their crafts.
The American Canoe Association (ACA) is a 125 year old organization
that works to “make the world a better place to paddle.” The
Association’s interest in water trails can be traced to its
founders, who cited “the exploration, creation and preservation of
water trails for recreational use by Americans of all ages” as a key
reason for the creation of the ACA.
We are pleased to be included in the ACA’s list of recommended
trails.
