Estabrook Dam Deadline Set

After years of neglected maintenance, state officials have ordered Milwaukee County to repair or abandon the ailing Estabrook Dam.

 
The Department of Natural Resources ordered the county on Tuesday to fix or tear down the aging structure on the Milwaukee River.

MMSD Project Should Ease Flooding Woes

Work crews have started preparations for a project intended to curb area flooding by easing the flow of stormwater between Underwood Creek and the Menomonee River.

Beginning in fall, Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District workers will spend 18 months digging an underground tunnel 17 feet in diameter. During heavy storms, the half-mile long tunnel will direct extra stormwater into a basin on the Milwaukee County Grounds.

FAA Rejects West Bend Airport Expansion

Stimulus funds to finance KK River Bridge

Milwaukee will spend $1.56 million in federal stimulus funds next year to replace the S. 6th St. bridge over the Kinnickinnic River and jump-start the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District's proposed $40 million flood-control plan for the stream, officials said.

After the new bridge is in place, the
district plans to begin removing concrete on the river bed and widening its channel from S. 6th St. downstream to S. Chase Ave., said David Fowler, senior project manager for MMSD. The channel work might be done in late 2010 or early 2011.

Recovery Act leads to "Fish Passage in the Milwaukee River Watershed"

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced yesterday that Ozaukee County has been awarded $4.7 million in Recovery Act funding for its “Fish Passage in the Milwaukee River Watershed” (FPMRW) project. The FPMRW project involves modifying or removing stream obstructions and barriers to link naturally occurring high quality habitats in the Milwaukee River Watershed.

Water Quality Group Receives $1.9M grant

The Joyce Foundation of Chicago has awarded a three-year, $1.9 million grant to a group of organizations working to improve water quality in the Milwaukee River basin.

The grant supports environmental groups, such as the Southeastern Wisconsin Watersheds Trust (SWWT), which Milwaukee Riverkeeper is part of,  to develop projects that will improve water quality and habitat, and help improve the health and economy of communities in Milwaukee-area watersheds.

$22 million PCB cleanup starts on Kinnickinnic River

PCBs have trickled into Lake Michigan from the Kinnickinnic River for decades, but a $22 million project now is under way to stem the flow of industrial pollutants into the lake.

The cleanup is the first step for potentially tens of millions in additional dollars to restore the natural character of Milwaukee's forgotten river.
